My vinyl collecting was super slow this year and I didn't acquire as many records as I had hoped, but I am excited about my new additions!
I'd like to say I fully blame the closure of my all-time favorite store, Hastings, for this year's collection failure. I used to go there at least once or twice every month and with each visit I'd tell myself I wasn't leaving without a new record. Now, there isn't any place that I know of close by where I can find new vinyl and I'd rather not shop online because of shipping costs and the fear of damage or loss. Another part of the problem is that I don't get out much when I'm staying at college.
Anyway, I only acquired 7 new LPs in 2017 - a little over a fourth of what I collected last year.

1. Arctic Monkeys - AM (2013)
GENRE: Alternative, rock My first vinyl purchase of the year was pretty late - I got this one at a Dillard's in Oklahoma while on a summer vacation (lol, who knew that crazy expensive department store could make me actually want to buy anything from them?). This is their most recent album, so I was extremely happy to hear they're supposed to release a new one in 2018! Favorite song(s): Knee Socks, One for the Road |
2. Arctic Monkeys - Suck it and See (2011)
3. Julien Baker - Turn Out the Lights (2017)
4. The Regrettes - Feel Your Feelings Fool! (2017)
5. The Collection - Listen to the River (2017)
GENRE: Folk, orchestral I've been listening to the Collection for a while and fell in love with this album as soon as it came out this year. David Wimbish continues to astonish me with his powerful, raw lyrics and the use of multiple instruments including horns and hand-clapping brings a unique, beautiful sound to every track. Favorite song(s): Birds, So Many People, Mama, Sing of the Moon |
6. The Wild Reeds - The World We Built (2017)
GENRE: Indie/folk I've recently been trying really hard to incorporate more female voices into my music listening because I have always been more inclined toward male voices "because they all sound different." Yeah, I can't believe I used to say that all the time, either. The Wild Reeds is made up of three females with three *distinct* voices - and they all harmonize beautifully. Favorite song(s): Everything Looks Better (in Hindsight), Capable |
7. Dean Martin - a winter romance (1959)
GENRE: Easy listening, pop I went to Books a Million to see if a record I wanted the last time I went was still there (and it was), but I ended up buying this one instead. Since it was after Christmas, they had a bunch of seasonal items on sale at 50% off. I got this for just $10! Favorite song: It Won't Cool Off |
I'm always listening to something (usually in my car or on the way to class), and I love finding new music through Spotify. I have the Collection, Julien Baker, and the Wild Reeds on vinyl because I discovered them on Spotify. Since 2014, I've been making new playlists on Spotify of songs I find during the year. You can check out my "2017 Finds" playlist here! It is my longest "Finds" playlist yet, with 173 songs.

I look forward to keeping my vinyl collection growing and add to the list at the end of next year.
Thanks for checking out my most recent additions!
