This year has been huge for me in the vinyl world. I got my first record player last December and my collection has steadily grown to 23 albums (not individual records, some are double LPs). I thought I'd share my current collection with you all now since the year is over and I'll update it at the end of next year and so on. Because of course I'm not done.
Asterisks (**) indicate the albums I recieved at Christmas.
All of the rest were either bought by me or my dad earlier in the year.

1. father john misty - fear fun (2012)
Love this, and it came with two huge fold-out record-cover-sized sheets of paper that include 31 chapters of a story he wrote called, "Mostly Hypothetical Mountains". I haven't got around to reading it yet, but I'm sure it'll be quite entertaining.
Favorite song(s): I'm Writing a Novel; Everyman Needs a Companion

3. brandon flowers - the desired effect (2015)
I love that Brandon did a solo album apart from the Killers and I love his voice.

5. fleet foxes - fleet foxes + sun giant ep (2008) - double LP
Fun fact: Josh Tillman (Father John Misty) used to drum for them. I love these guys, although they're not together anymore.
Favorite song: He Doesn't Know Why; Your Protector

6. Neutral milk hotel - in the aeroplane over the sea (1998)
This is one of the first records I bought and mainly because the Avett Brothers did a cover of the title track that I love. This Anne Frank-inspired concept album is really amazing.

My introduction to folk music and my first favorite band. Added this one to my Christmas list since they only ever had Wilder Mind at Hastings.

8. mumford & sons - wilder mind (2015)
Favorite song(s): Ditmas; Broad-Shouldered Beasts; Monster
9. the new basement tapes - lost on the river (2014)
A Bob Dylan-inspired musical supergroup including Marcus Mumford, Rhiannon Giddens, and Elvis Costello. Very neat collaboration.
Favorite song: Kansas City

10. trampled by turtles - wild animals (2014)
Favorite song: Winners
11. the everly brothers - roots (1968)
Funny story, I actually got this one for free because it didn't have a price sticker on it and the guy at Hastings checkout just let me have it since the store was about to close anyway. Sad, but cool.

12. weezer - the white album (2016)
I just realized this is the only album I own that actually came out this year. Rad. Long live Weezer.
Favorite song(s): Wind in Our Sail; King of the World

13. panic! at the disco - too weird to live, too rare to die (2013)
I picked up this one a little while before Death of a Bachelor came out. My main goal now is to get Pretty. Odd. on vinyl.

14. florence + the machine - lungs (2009)
As Hastings was closing, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to buy an album by my first favorite female/alternative singer-songwriter, Florence Welch.
Favorite song(s): Swimming; Heavy in Your Arms; Cosmic Love

15. vampire weekend - modern vampires of the city (2013)
I only got this because I was at Hastings one time and didn't want to leave without purchasing at least one record (I used to do that every time I went in there this past year). My cousin was with me and told me her sister had this one and that the band sounded pretty good. I came to find that more than accurate. Ezra can write.
Favorite song(s): Unbelievers; Everlasting Arms

16. cage the elephant - tell me i'm pretty (2015)
Favorite song(s): Punchin' Bag; Portuguese Knife Fight
17. the black keys - rubber factory (2004)
I already have Brothers, El Camino, and Turn Blue on CD so I wanted something different/older and less popular for vinyl. I almost hate buying a vinyl of an album I've never heard because I fear I won't like it but this one sounds great.
Favorite song: The Lengths

18. the strokes - first impressions of earth (2006)
Can't have a collection without some Julian Casablancas and at least one parental guidance label.
Favorite song: You Only Live Once

19. the killers - sam's town (2006)
Love the Killers, love Sam's Town, love the ram.

20. alt-j - this is all yours (2014) - double LPI only got this one because of Left Hand Free, the fact that there were two different colored vinyls inside, and because Hastings had it marked way down. I thought it would be an interesting addition to my collection and maybe I'll grow to like it, but it's probably my least favorite right now. Favorite song: Left Hand Free Colors: Translucent Blue (Sides A/B), Translucent Yellow (Sides C/D) |
21. the gospel according to shawn james and the shapeshifters (2015)
This guy is so cool and he's from Fayettville. When I ordered this from him, I asked if he could sign it, and he did! It was my very first colored (and signed) vinyl and it is beautiful.

22. alice cooper - killer (1971)
One day I came home from college, and this was sitting on my pillow. Hastings had it for a while and I kept putting off getting it because I wanted to wait until the price was lower but my dad ended up getting it for me so someone else wouldn't beat me to it. Alice Cooper is one of my dad's all-time favorite musicians and he used to have this record himself, so it's really cool to be able to have one for my own collection now.
Favorite song: Be My Lover
Dad's favorite: Halo of Flies

23. the beatles - sgt. pepper's lonely hearts club band (1967 *original pressing*)
This was my very first record and before it was mine, it was my dad's. It's so cool and special because it's the only record he kept and has had all these years. It's in amazing condition.
Favorite song: Getting Better
Favorite song: Getting Better
And my top 5 favorite records i got this year are...
1. julien baker - sprained ankle
2. father john misty - fear fun
3. the killers - sam's town
4. Weezer - the white ablum
5. PANIC! AT THE DISCO - TOO WEIRD TO LIVE, TOO RARE TO DIe
Of these 23 records, 18 of them were bought at Hastings, my absolute favorite store and place to be. And now sadly, it's gone. But that won't stop me from finding more awesome records like these.
Right now you're probably thinking, 'wait, where are the Avett Brothers on this list??' and well, I don't have any Avett albums on vinyl yet. I KNOW, it's crazy! Who am I?? Lol but at least I have literally every single album on CD. I do plan to aquire some Brothers on vinyl very soon, don't worry. ;)
While we're still on the subject of 2016 music, I thought my Spotify stats would be interesting to share really quick as well:

Of course I'm in the top 1% of Avett fans, I AM the 1% ahahaha! Just started listening to Manchester Orchestra and TFB this year. Glad I found them, love both. I didn't realize I had listened to Weezer all that much but I think it was because of the new album and I listened to them a bunch before going to their concert in July. |
Thanks for checking out my vinyl collection so far!!
I'd love to hear what you think of it and if you have one, I'd also love to know what albums you have in your own collection!
|Happy New Year, Long Live Vinyl| :)
